Vision Statement
To become the leading voice of the American people in support of the men and women in law enforcement.
Mission Statement
The mission of Citizens Behind the Badge is to put an end to the misguided and disastrous movement to "defund and defame the police" and to ensure that our law enforcement professionals receive the support and resources needed to keep America safe.
History
Founded in 2020, Citizens Behind the Badge is dedicated to becoming the leading voice of the American people in support of the men and women in law enforcement. Our goals are to counter and put an end to the misguided and disastrous movement to “defund the police,” to ensure that law enforcement receives the resources needed to keep our nation safe; to conduct a massive public education campaign in support of law enforcement; to significantly bolster law enforcement recruitment efforts; to promote pro-law enforcement matters from the grassroots perspective; to help make the economic, social and media environment safer for law enforcement personnel and their families; and to advance local, state and federal domestic policy in support of this important mission.
Citizens Behind the Badge is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization based in McLean, Virginia. It was founded by Craig W. Floyd, Founding CEO Emeritus of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Under Craig’s leadership, two national treasures were created: the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in 1991; and the National Law Enforcement Museum in 2018. Joining him as founding board members are Bill Erfurth, a retired and highly distinguished 26-year-veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, and Dennis Collins, the father of a law enforcement officer and a longtime advocate and volunteer leader in the policing profession.
What We Believe
We believe that the “defund and defame the police” movement is based on a false and reckless narrative that is undermining the safety and security of our communities.
We believe that the “defund and defame” movement is unjust and an insult to America’s police men and women who risk their lives every day for our safety.
We believe the “defund and defame” movement ignores the fact that appropriate and necessary reforms are being implemented nationwide to ensure that our officers can do their jobs better and safer.
We believe the media’s reporting on the issue of police use of force and race has been biased, sensationalist and not factually-based, helping to fuel the fire of anti-police rhetoric.
We believe that many of our nation’s elected officials have reacted in a knee-jerk and irresponsible fashion to the vicious anti-police hate rhetoric of the “defund and defame” movement, which has led to violence, property damage and loss of life.
We believe that in the absence of organized opposition, the “defund and defame the police” movement has caused many politicians and the media to accept and promote the falsehood that law enforcement officers are not doing their job honorably and professionally.
We believe that there have already been many instances where the “defund and defame” movement has jeopardized public safety in communities across the country and much more harm will occur if left unchecked.
We believe that America’s politicians need to know that the majority of the American people support law enforcement and oppose the anti-police and go soft-on-crime “defund and defame” efforts.
We believe that the anti-police and go soft-on-crime “defund and defame” movement has already created a public safety crisis, evidenced by soaring violent crime, accomplished police chiefs who are either resigning or being fired, rank-and-file officers who are leaving the profession in droves, and a dramatic decline in police recruitment.
We believe that the anti-police rhetoric that has been spewed by progressive activists and politicians, and amplified by the media, has resulted in more officers being injured and killed in the line of duty.
We believe that police funding needs to be restored and bolstered to ensure the proper level of personnel, training, equipment and technology that is necessary to keep America safe.
We believe that the adoption of no-cash bail and other pro-criminal policy reforms resulting from the “defund and defame” movement need to be reversed in order to restore public safety.
We believe that liberal, soft-on-crime district attorneys, emboldened by the “defund and defame” movement, have failed to preserve public safety and need to be replaced.
We believe that increased measures need to be taken to maximize the safety and well-being of our officers, including more law enforcement personnel, improved training and equipment, tougher penalties for assaulting or killing a law enforcement professional, and increased mental health resources for officers.
We believe that public opinion and support must be mobilized NOW to counter the disastrous and misguided efforts to cut police funding and enact pro-criminal policies that have created a public safety and police safety crisis.
We believe that our law enforcement officers need to hear a loud and clear message from our nation’s citizenry and our elected officials that they are highly respected and that their service and sacrifice is deeply appreciated.
We believe that by collecting and disseminating accurate facts and figures about law enforcement and crime, along with public opinion data, we will provide our elected leaders and policymakers with what is needed to resist the calls to defund, defame and dismantle the police, and to enact pro-criminal policies.
We believe that Citizens Behind the Badge is the leading citizens-based group working to provide accurate and convincing information to the public, the media and America’s government leaders that will stop and reverse the “defund and defame” movement and the soft-on-crime policies that have resulted.
