Vision Statement

Be the leading voice of the American people in support of the men and women in law enforcement.

Mission Statement

The mission of Citizens Behind the Badge is to mobilize and amplify citizen support to ensure that law enforcement receives the resources and respect needed and deserved to keep America safe, and to reverse the disastrous consequences of the “defund and defame the police” movement.

History

Founded in 2020, Citizens Behind the Badge is the leading voice of the American people in support of the men and women in law enforcement. Our goals are to ensure that law enforcement receives the resources and respect needed and deserved to keep our nation safe; reverse the disastrous consequences of the “defund and defame the police” movement; conduct a massive public education campaign in support of law enforcement; bolster law enforcement recruitment efforts; advocate for pro-law enforcement policies and elected officials at all levels of government; serve as a reliable source of accurate information on crime and policing; tell the stories that exemplify law enforcement’s extraordinary service and sacrifice; and promote officer safety and wellness.

Citizens Behind the Badge is an IRS approved nonprofit 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization based in McLean, Virginia. It was founded by Craig W. Floyd, Founding CEO Emeritus of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF). Under Craig’s leadership, the NLEOMF became the leader in promoting officer safety and welfare, and two national treasures were created: the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in 1991; and the National Law Enforcement Museum in 2018. Joining him as founding board members are Bill Erfurth, a retired and highly distinguished 26-year-veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, and Dennis Collins, the father of a law enforcement officer, business leader and a longtime advocate and volunteer leader in the policing profession.

What We Believe

  • We believe that providing law enforcement with the personnel, equipment, training, technology and funding needed to protect communities in the United States from criminal violence has overwhelming public support, regardless of race, ethnicity or political beliefs.

  • We believe that the “defund and defame the police” movement, which began in 2020:

      • Was unjust and an insult to America’s police men and women who risk their lives every day for our safety;

      • Caused a dramatic rise in homicides and other violent crimes in cities and towns across the United States;

      • Led to progressive policies and soft-on-crime prosecutorial practice that has benefited criminals at the expense of public safety;

      • Caused the retention and recruitment of sworn law enforcement officers to drop to a dangerously low level; and

      • Created an increasingly dangerous environment for law enforcement officers.

  • We believe that appropriate and necessary reforms have been and are continuing to be implemented nationwide to ensure that our officers can do their jobs better and safer.

  • We believe the media’s reporting on the issue of police use of force and race has been biased, sensationalist and not factually based, helping to fuel the fire of anti-police rhetoric.

  • We believe that current data clearly shows that law enforcement officers are doing their job honorably and professionally, with 99 percent of citizens who had an interaction with officers saying that there was no police misconduct involved.

  • We believe that police funding needs to be restored and bolstered to ensure the proper level of personnel, training, equipment and technology that is necessary to keep America safe.

  • We believe that the adoption of no-cash bail and other pro-criminal policy reforms need to be reversed to restore public safety.

  • We believe that liberal, soft-on-crime district attorneys have failed to preserve public safety and need to be replaced.

  • We believe that all current laws presently in place at the federal, state and local level need to be aggressively enforced.

  • We believe that increased measures need to be taken to maximize the safety and well-being of our officers, including improved training and equipment, tougher penalties for assaulting or killing a law enforcement professional, and increased mental health resources for officers.

  • We believe that illegal drugs and migrants coming into our country through the southern border are posing a serious public safety threat, and border controls need to be tightened.

  • We believe that our law enforcement officers need to hear a loud and clear message from our nation’s citizenry and our elected officials that they are highly respected and that their service and sacrifice is deeply appreciated.

  • We believe that by collecting and disseminating accurate facts and figures about law enforcement and crime, along with public opinion data, we will help to ensure that public safety is strengthened, and our officers will receive the support and respect they need and deserve to keep America safe.
